I’ve been super bad about updating this and I’m about to get even all sorts of worse the next week.
For those of you who know me personally or even those who read this every so often, you know that I’m going to China. What you may not know is that I’m going to China tomorrow. I’m excited but I’m also incredibly nervous. I rarely go to places where I don’t have a working knowledge of the language alone — it’s much better to look like a stupid American with two people that it is with one.
I think my nervousness about China has physically exhausted me — it’s only 9:20 and I’m about to pass out.
One of the most exciting things about this trip is that I get to go to China. I don’t think I’m going to do too much touristy stuff while I’m there so I’ll be (hopefully) seeing Beijing through a Beijingian’s eyes — to me that’s one of the most exciting parts of visiting a city. I don’t want to do the touristy stuff; Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see the Great Wall, but I also want to know what the typical 25 year old who lives in Beijing does.
What sucks about this is that I don’t think I’m going to be able to update this while I’m in China — censorship and all that jazz.
I never got to write about the government shutdown which has affected some of my friends. Thankfully it’s not affected them in a way where they aren’t getting paid or stuff like that — minor things like getting visas… OK so it’s a pretty big deal. Shutting down the government doesn’t really help anybody, except Congress because they get paid during the shutdown.
There’s a whole bunch of other stuff that’s happened too but seriously, I’m way too tired to talk about it.
Even if I can post in China, I think I’m going to avoid going on this site. My friend was telling me earlier today that his mom searched for the Dali Lama on the internet in China and the Chinese government shut down the internet to the entire hotel for a day. I hope that they get the New York Times there, that way I can catch up on the current events.
Maybe I’ll post tomorrow… it’ll be a surprise!
